RTS.
The Aesthetics of Variability.

Transforming heterogeneous industrial waste into a premium, narrative-rich material signature for luxury retail and hospitality.

RTS is a composite material born from the transformation of heterogeneous waste streams (fashion textiles, canned food packaging, and construction debris). Unlike virgin materials that pursue uniformity, RTS does not hide its origin. Instead, its inherent variability; irregularities, textures, and chromatic shifts, is its defining aesthetic.

This research sought to elevate that unpredictability into a deliberate reinterpretation of the luxury codes. The challenge was to ensure industrial reproducibility and cost efficiency, essential for high-end adoption, without concealing the material’s recycled soul. In this project, we merged material science with design experimentation, running multiple cycles to test the impact of pigments, mold-integrated textures, and formulations. The goal was never to impose a form, but to reveal the inherent beauty of the reclaimed, prioritizing authentic character over artificial perfection.

Strategic Takeaway

Real luxury sustainability requires redefining "perfection." In the RTS collection, waste origin becomes a source of unique, non-replicable identity. By designing for end-of-life recyclability and embracing material sensitivity, we turned the “irregularities” into the brand’s most expressive asset.

Origin as Identity

Waste streams directly dictate color and texture, creating singular, non-replicable batches.
Sensitivity & Stability

Material behavior is highly responsive to moisture, binder types, and waste formats (fibers vs. powders), requiring precise parameter control.
New Luxury

"Imperfections" are no longer defects; they are rare, story-rich attributes that convey authenticity.

Potential Applications

  • Interior architecture for retail and hospitality.
  • Furniture systems substituting wood and stone.
  • Lighting and decorative objects.

Market Adoption & Scalability

The RTS material system has successfully transitioned from industrial research to commercial application, adopted by rands for high-visibility retail environments. In fact it WIM Studio is working on a huge manufacturing site in Galicia.

Note: While the core material R&D and formulation are based on the patented material and research done for the RTS, the specific interior design execution and installation were led by the brand’s architectural partners. Which shows the big adaptability that this material has.

Application in Focus: Barbour Flagship Retail Experience
Leveraging the core RTS composite formulation developed in this project, a specialized variation was engineered for one of the Barbour’s shop decoration. The material was selected for its ability to translate industrial waste into a premium, textured aesthetic that aligns with the brand’s heritage and sustainability goals while also compliant with the technical standards.
