What if complex material aesthetics could emerge from a single industrial gesture?

An investigation into how industrial thermoforming can generate complex multimaterial aesthetics through process intelligence rather than assembly.

FOCUS    Multimaterial finishes with existing thermoforming technology
STATUS   Collection launched Q1 2018

This research explores the potential of thermoforming technologies to create multimaterial surfaces through simplified manufacturing processes. Developed in collaboration with Roctool, the project investigates how existing thermoforming systems can generate hybrid finishes combining distinct tactile and visual identities within a one-shot transformation process. Rather than adding decorative layers or secondary assemblies, the research focuses on embedding material complexity directly into the forming logic itself.

Luxury industries have long pursued seamless integrations between contrasting materials: wood and polymer, mineral and resin, softness and rigidity. Multiple assembly stages, adhesives, secondary finishing, or costly manufacturing operations.

This project proposes an alternative approach: using process intelligence to generate multimaterial expressions directly during thermoforming. By rethinking the relationship between heat, pressure, surface behaviour, and material interaction, the research explores how existing industrial technologies may produce richer tactile and visual experiences with reduced manufacturing complexity.

Strategic Takeaway

Innovation does not always require new technologies.  Sometimes innovation emerges from reinterpreting existing manufacturing systems through a material and aesthetic lens.
